Nursing School Success Tips

Hinds Community College, Vicksburg Transition to RN Program
"Senate Hearing"
On July 20, 2010, the Hinds Community College Transition to RN program , Vicksburg Campus
participated in a MOCK Hearing as part of their course requirements.
The MOCK legislators consisted of:
Becky Tustain and Bobbie Anderson, Vicksburg Transition to RN Faculty;
Libby Mahaffey and Debra Spring, Hinds Nursing Administration;
and Linda Suttle, Executive director for MOADN.
Senators were: Anderson, Mahaffey, Spring and Suttle.
Legislative Clerk : Tustain
The purpose of this activity was to facilitate empowerment in political issues impacting nursing, and
to allow new RNs to become active in the law making process that regulates their profession.
The students prepared presentations and simulated letters to his/her own local legislator
regarding a simulated Senate Bill Prior to the evening.
Tustain and Anderson gave an overview of the legislative process and the history of NOADN,
and importance of this activity. All Students presented a 2 minute presentation at the MOCK HEARING to testify
in support or opposition of the assigned simulated bill.
The MOCK Legislative team asked questions and gave feedback to each student immediately
after each presentation.
This required research and preparation on the student's part.
Students, initially, reported fear of public speaking. However, after the MOCK hearing,
all students reported that they felt empowered to actually testify in a "real" hearing.
